Go Sing It on the Mountain: A Christmas Song Recital at The Peale
December 22, 2024 at 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm
Join Kellen Johnson and Joel Lingg for an afternoon of Christmas music at The Peale! Program selections include music by Johann Sebastian Bach, George Frideric Handel, Adolphe-Charles Adam, H. T. Burleigh, Pietro Alessandro Yon, Richard Rodgers, Hugh Martin, and Mel Tormé.
Kellen Johnson (baritone) first began his classical vocal training at CCBC, the Community College of Baltimore County. After graduating with his Associates Degree in 2017, he then transferred to complete his Bachelors’ at Towson University that fall. During his time at Towson he won first place in both the Adult College Mens’ Division for the National Association for Teachers of Singing (NATS) and the Towson music department’s James L. Dunbar Memorial Scholarship competitions. In February 2020, Mr. Johnson was selected to sing at a masterclass instructed by world-renowned operatic tenor Lawrence Brownlee. Kellen also performed with the Towson University Chorale and Mens’ Chorus.
A full-time security officer at the Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA), Johnson was featured in such museum exhibitions and programs as Areas of Action, Big Table Connections: ‘Strange Fruit’, and, most notably in 2022, the groundbreaking Guarding the Art exhibit, which brought him national recognition with such media outlets as NPR, the BBC, The Today Show: Sunday Morning, and The Kelly Clarkson Show. As a professional operatic baritone, Kellen made his stage debut at Towson University in a 2022 student production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, American composer Michael Ching’s contemporary adaptation of the Shakespeare classic. Since graduating from Towson in 2022, Kellen currently works as the bass/baritone soloist at University Baptist Church, and as a chorister with Annapolis Opera. This spring, he will make his chorus debut with Washington National Opera in their production of Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess.
Kellen will be accompanied by Joel Lingg (piano), a musician with a deep passion for his craft. Having studied at the Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC) and Towson University, Joel’s talent was recognized early on, earning him the titles of Pianist of the Year at CCBC and the Talent Award in the Towson University Music Department. Driven by a love of sharing music with others, Mr. Lingg strives to evoke the same profound emotional connection he first experienced when discovering classical music. His performances and dedication continue to inspire audiences, bridging the beauty of the past with the present.
