Mission & Vision

The Peale is Baltimore’s Community Museum.

The Peale's Mission

The Peale provides an accessible platform for artistic, scientific, and cultural projects where participants can take creative risks, learn, connect with communities in Baltimore and beyond, and share their stories both in the historic Peale Museum building and online.

Our Vision

The Peale will advance the role of museums in their communities as inspiring places where creators of all kinds are valued and contribute to an inclusive cultural record.

Core Values

Authenticity

We present and steward authentic Baltimore stories. By the same token, we are forthcoming and honest in our work with one another and with community members; we admit shortcomings, proactively seek solutions, and strive for transparency in our deliberations and communication with internal and externa constituencies.

Accessibility

Whenever and wherever possible, we remove barriers and apply best practices to ensure all visitors, both in-person and online, and staff, are offered the options, tools, and the accommodations they need to fully participate with us.

Experimentation

We value purposeful progress by encouraging staff and collaborators to test and evaluate new ideas, methods, and approaches to their work; and to actively suggest alternative points of view when challenging the status quo.

Equity

We question and review our ideas, our communications, and choices to ensure they acknowledge and address structural inequalities — historic and current — that advantage some and disadvantage others.

Community Impact

We strive to present work from a broad range of groups and individual collaborators that uplift and amplify community stories and voices and, collectively, offer a continuously updated narrative about Baltimore’s past, present and potential for the future.
