Apprentices

The Guild @ The Peale

Building the Next Generation of Preservation Tradespeople

A Place to Learn, Restore, and Preserve

The Guild @ The Peale provides paid, hands-on apprenticeships in historic building preservation, equipping participants with the skills needed to restore, repair, and maintain Maryland’s cultural heritage.

Our apprentices work side-by-side with experienced preservation professionals, gaining real-world experience in areas such as:

  • Masonry repair and repointing

  • Woodworking and carpentry for historic structures

  • Window restoration and weatherization

  • Plastering and decorative finishes

  • Conservation of historic materials

Launched in 2020, the program is dedicated to increasing equity and inclusion in the preservation trades, with a focus on providing pathways into stable, well-paying careers for people from marginalized communities in Baltimore.

Funded by the U.S. Department of Labor, The Guild @ The Peale offers a living wage, professional mentorship, and a direct link to meaningful employment in the preservation field. Apprentices graduate with nationally recognized skills that are in high demand as Maryland works to preserve its historic buildings for future generations.

By connecting traditional craftsmanship with modern preservation standards, the Guild not only safeguards our architectural heritage—it also strengthens Maryland’s workforce and builds community pride.
