225 Holliday Street, Baltimore, MD

About the Exhibit

The Peale presents Built to Last: Baltimore’s Enduring Landmarks, an archival exhibition celebrating ten of the city’s most iconic historic buildings — each a testament to Baltimore’s resilience, ingenuity, and architectural heritage.

Developed originally through a partnership between the U.S. National Park Service’s Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS), the Maryland Historical TrustPreservation Maryland, and the City of Baltimore’s Commission for Historical and Architectural Preservation (CHAP)Built to Last documented Baltimore’s most significant structures in large-format black-and-white photography and historical research.

This exhibition showcases selections from that original documentation project, revealing how these buildings — from churches and banks to theaters and corporate headquarters — helped shape the city’s skyline and civic identity.

Inspiration for a New Generation

The archival display of Built to Last is being reinstalled as a companion to The Peale’s upcoming juried art exhibition of the same name, opening in spring 2026Artists from across Baltimore are currently invited to create original works inspired by these same landmarks — connecting the legacy of preservation with new visions of creativity and community storytelling.

📅 Call for Artists open through November 3, 2025.
