Overview
Baltimore is a city shaped by what it builds—and what it chooses to preserve. Built to Last brings together contemporary artists and historic materials to explore the buildings that define Baltimore’s past and continue to shape its future,

About the Exhibition
Last fall, The Peale invited artists across the region to respond to a simple but powerful idea:
What do Baltimore’s buildings carry through time?
Artists were asked to interpret ten enduring landmarks—structures that have shaped the city’s civic, cultural, and architectural identity.
The result is a layered exhibition that pairs historic black-and-white architectural photography with contemporary artworks created in response to them.
Together, these works explore:
- Preservation and loss
- Adaptation and reuse
- The evolving meaning of place in Baltimore
What You’ll Experience
Visitors will encounter both documentation and interpretation:
- Historic photographs capturing Baltimore’s architectural legacy
- Contemporary artworks reimagining these same spaces
- A dialogue between past and present across ten landmark sites
This is not just an exhibition—it’s a way of seeing the city differently.
