Built to Last Exhibition Call for Artists

What do a concert hall, a synagogue, and an old newspaper headquarters have in common? In Baltimore, they stand as silent witnesses to the city’s evolution—testaments to architectural resilience, civic imagination, and layered histories. Now, The Peale invites artists to bring these stories to life.

Built to Last: A Juried Art Exhibit of Baltimore’s Enduring Landmarks is now accepting submissions through September 15, 2025. The exhibit, opening in April 2026, will present a powerful fusion of visual art and architectural storytelling. Artists 18 and older are encouraged to submit up to three original 2D works that interpret ten iconic Baltimore buildings.

Why this project, and why now? “These buildings aren’t just backdrops to our lives,” says John Suau, Executive Director of The Peale. “They are vessels of memory. Some are beautifully restored, some are on the edge of being forgotten. All are part of Baltimore’s cultural DNA.”

Artists selected by a jury of renowned curators and preservationists will be featured in a gallery exhibition at The Peale, with their works also eligible for sale during a closing art auction. Jurors include Catherine Arthur, Chief Curator at the Maryland Center for History & Culture, and Jo Briggs, Curator of 18th- and 19th-century Art at The Walters Art Museum.

The exhibition is supported in part by the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts and a growing list of cultural partners including Baltimore Heritage, AIA Baltimore, and Preservation Maryland.

Entry is $25 for the first image and $10 per additional submission (limit of 3). Apply through CaFÉ: https://artist.callforentry.org
