Built to Last
Opening April 17 at The Peale

Last fall, The Peale issued a call to artists across the region to respond to a simple but powerful theme: Baltimore’s historic buildings and the stories they carry through time.
Artists were invited to interpret ten enduring Baltimore landmarks — structures that have shaped the city’s civic, cultural, and architectural identity. From churches and theaters to financial institutions and civic buildings, these places represent the layers of history embedded in Baltimore’s streets.
The response was inspiring. Artists submitted works in a wide range of styles and media, each offering a personal perspective on the buildings that have helped define Baltimore’s landscape. Jurors carefully reviewed the submissions and selected a group of works that capture both the physical presence and the symbolic meaning of these landmarks.
Now, the exhibition is almost here.
Built to Last will open at The Peale — Baltimore’s Community Museum on April 17, 2026, and remain on view through June 1, 2026.
The exhibition pairs historic black-and-white architectural photography of ten Baltimore landmarks with contemporary artworks created in response to them. Together, these works highlight the enduring role of architecture in shaping the city’s identity while inviting viewers to consider how Baltimore’s buildings continue to evolve through preservation, adaptation, and creative reuse.
The featured landmarks represent a cross-section of Baltimore’s history and civic life. Some are grand institutions that have stood for more than a century. Others have experienced cycles of decline and renewal. All of them reflect the city’s ongoing conversation between past and future.
Visitors to the exhibition will encounter both documentation and interpretation — historic images that record Baltimore’s architectural heritage alongside new artistic responses that imagine what these buildings mean today.
Built to Last is presented as part of Life in Baltimore, The Peale’s ongoing initiative to document and interpret the city’s civic and cultural life through exhibitions, storytelling, and community collaboration.
The exhibition will open with a public reception on April 17, welcoming artists, preservation advocates, and members of the community to celebrate Baltimore’s enduring landmarks.
