the Way, the Truth, and the Light examines the intergenerational experiences shaping Black youthhood. Through memory, imagination, and shared history, this body of work reflects the ways Black children inherit resilience, culture, joy, and possibility. “the Way” speaks to the paths forged by previous generations, “the Truth” to the lived realities that continue to shape identity, and “the Light” to the everlasting Black spirit that exists within every Black child. Together, these works affirm that Black youth are not only products of this configured reality, but the cultivators of the future.
About the Artist
Khalil McFarlane (b. 2004) is a multidisciplinary creative from Baltimore, Maryland. Shaped by the duality of the city’s vibrant artistic scene and the challenges of an environment marked by institutional neglect, his work explores the intersections of personal narrative, collective history, and Black identity.
He is committed to building community-rooted spaces that center the vibrancy of Black culture and experience. Khalil’s work invites viewers to engage and reflect with means to cultivate a shared understanding of our collective experiences. In his practice, he seeks to bridge personal narrative and collective history, exploring the complexities of Black identity and experience. By integrating text, symbols, and imagery drawn from African American traditions, he enriches his work through intentional layering and cultural resonance.
