Please join us for an afternoon of cocktails and casual conversation with Baltimore artists Ed Istwan and Curator Kristen Hileman. Ed and Kristen will discuss the exhibit FLOWERS. This show features over 300 individual works that create an environment when placed together.

Moses Williams was born ca. 1776 and was known for his ability to create detailed silhouettes (or “profiles”) of people’s faces. Williams was born enslaved to the artist and museum director, Charles Willson Peale, and grew up working in Peale’s Philadelphia museum. Williams’ story will now be told at the Peale Museum in Baltimore, founded by Rembrandt Peale.

You Be Safe Now is a retrospective exhibition of art made in Baltimore. For the past five years, Julia Glatfelter has captured moments in paint and cut paper collage—rendering the colors and observances of our city. The result is a large collection of everyday images: magnolia blossoms, “no shoot zone” signs, narrow alley streets, and foxtrot patrols. What we notice sets the tone for our experience here.

Hear from young virtuosi musicians in this intimate performance in the acoustically perfect Peale. Praised for her captivating stage presence and technically masterful performances, Hanzhi Wang wowed local audiences in her 2019 Candlelight debut and is the first accordionist in history to win First Prize at the YCA Competition. Likewise, saxophonist Steven Banks is YCA’s first ever First Prize winner on his instrument.

The Banjo Gathering is the only forum focused entirely on the banjo as a historical, cultural, and design object. The 3-day 2022 gathering was in Baltimore in order to recognize the city’s role in banjo manufacturing, the early presence of banjos in the Chesapeake region, and how the enduring consequences of enslavement shapes our understanding of banjo history.
